Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
The coins of Botswana are known as 'thebe'. Nigerian coins are called 'kobo' and the coins of Turkmenistan are known as the 'manat'. In Norway they use the 'ore', in Kazakhstan the 'tiyn' and in North Korea the 'chon'. Uruguay has the 'centisimo', Georgia has the 'lari', and Mauritania the 'khoums'. Papua New Guinea uses the 'toea'. Poland the 'grosz', and Bulgaria the 'stotinka'. In Turkey they use 'kurus', in Madagascar the 'iraimbilanja', and Zambia the 'ngwee'.
The other words are the names of animals in different languages. The word 'perro' means 'dog' in Spanish. The word 'gat' means 'cat' in Catalan, and 'mus' means 'mouse' in Danish. In Filipino, 'kabayo' means 'horse', and in Dutch, 'koe' is 'cow'. The word for 'camel' in Arabic is 'jamal'.
Interestingly, there are only two countries in the world that have non-decimalized currency: Mauritania and Madagascar. In Mauritania, one 'ouguia' is equivalent to five 'khoums', and in Madigascar, one 'ariary' is equivalent to five 'iraimbilanja'.
The front of the coins, commonly referred to as 'heads', is officially known as the 'obverse'. The back of the coins, commonly known as 'tails', is officially known as the 'reverse'. Not all coins are just circular, although most are. Some are square but without sharp edges, some are scalloped, some are heptagonal, octagonal, hexagonal, decagons, triangles, and others have holes in the centre. They also vary in size, weight, colour, thickness, and composition from country to country.
